What is temperature?

Temperature is a measure of hotness or coldness of a physical object with reference to some standard value. Similar to pressure or density, it is an intensive property. Meaning that it does not change as the amount of matter changes.

Degree Fahrenheit originally based its 0° value as the freezing temperature of a solution made from a mixture of water, ice, and ammonium chloride. But today, it's defined by two fixed points, the freezing point (32°) and the boiling point (212°) of water.

Degree Celsius is a unit of temperature on the Celsius scale, a temperature scale originally known as the centigrade scale. It's a linear scale based on for the freezing point of water and 100° for the boiling point of water.
