What is temperature?

Temperature is a measure of hotness or coldness of a physical object with reference to some standard value. Similar to pressure or density, it is an intensive property. Meaning that it does not change as the amount of matter changes.

Degree Rankine is similar to the Kelvin scale in that it starts at absolute zero and 0°R is the same as 0K (Kelvin) but is different as a change of 1°R is the same as a change of 1°F and not 1°C (Celsius).

Degree Fahrenheit originally based its 0° value as the freezing temperature of a solution made from a mixture of water, ice, and ammonium chloride. But today, it's defined by two fixed points, the freezing point (32°) and the boiling point (212°) of water.
